AVON FOUNDATION PRESENTS 2008 ANNUAL BREAST CANCER FORUM: ADVANCING PREVENTION AND ACCESS TO TREATMENT

Speakers to Release Significant New Data in Key Presentations at 2008 Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Forum in Houston, TX
 

WHAT: The Avon Foundation Breast Cancer Forum will bring together breast cancer experts from all 50 states to discuss the latest research studies and to examine programs that link breast cancer prevention, screening, and treatment for underserved and minority populations. The purpose of the Forum is to foster collaboration, share best practices and disseminate the most recent breast cancer clinical trials information that organizations can immediately apply and use to improve their patients’ lives.
   
WHO: Approximately 275 breast cancer experts representing 12 major cancer centers, 80 public hospitals and 140 community non-profit organizations from around the U.S. The audience represents a diverse group who in 2008 will: undertake critical research; perform more than 1,000,000 educational encounters at health fairs and one-on-one counseling sessions; link more than 150,000 women into mammography screenings; and navigate those with abnormal screens into follow-up diagnostics and treatment. As part of its commitment to facilitate cooperation and collaboration, the Avon Foundation also extends invitations to the pharmaceutical and medical equipment communities so that doctors, researchers, industry and the patients they all serve will benefit from interaction and open communication with one another.

Key Presentation Schedule:
  • Monday, February 4 (10am-11am)
    Dr. Wendie Berg, Study Chair, American College of Radiology Imaging Network ACRIN-6666 Trial, presents new results from ACRIN-6666 and discusses the use of ultrasound in addition to mammography for breast cancer screening.
  • Tuesday, February 5 (1pm- 2pm)
    Dr. Steve Whitman, Director, Sinai Urban Health Institute (Chicago), will release new data from a commissioned study on Houston black/white disparities in breast cancer mortality. Dr. Whitman will discuss lessons learned in his hometown of Chicago and a new Houston Breast Cancer Task Force will be announced.
  • Wednesday, February 6 (9am-10am)
    Dr. Polly Newcomb, Program Head, Cancer Prevention, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center (Seattle) will present results of a new study examining how pregnancy alters future risk of breast cancer.
  • Wednesday, February 6 (11am-12pm)
    Dr. Susan Love, President and Medical Director, Dr. Susan Love Research Foundation (Pacific Palisades, CA) will discuss ongoing research developing new ways to detect breast cancer risk with the ultimate goal of preventing the disease altogether.
