Membership and Purpose:

The Avon Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board (SAB) includes experts in public health and biomedical research relevant to the breast cancer and breast health field, and breast cancer survivor-advocates who serve two-year terms. The SAB reviews proposals and makes recommendations about research and clinical care funding priorities and candidates to the Foundation Board of Directors. The Foundation Board makes the final funding decision for each proposal. The SAB also evaluates the progress of currently funded beneficiary projects and provides input guiding the strategic direction of the Foundation and its breast cancer programs.

In January of each calendar year, nominations submitted in the prior twelve months are considered based on qualifications and area of expertise. New members will be chosen with priority given to specialties needed to implement the current Foundation strategy. Current SAB members review nominees and their qualifications and make recommendations on new nominees to the Avon Foundation Board of Directors. The Foundation Board of Directors makes the final decision on inviting nominees to join the SAB.

Mission:
Since 1993, the Avon Breast Cancer Crusade has supported community-based organizations that provide local outreach, breast health education, linkage to screening services and follow-up care in partnership with local medical providers, with a focus on supporting the medically underserved. The Foundation has funded nearly 1,000 such community organizations, with at least one active program in all 50 states.

Avon Breast Care Fund Process:
The Avon Foundation Breast Care Fund issues Requests for Proposals, conducts peer review of all submitted applications, and then provides ongoing technical assistance and program evaluation to selected grantees. Depending upon the focus of the funding, peer review is conducted by a panel of approximately 20-30 reviewers from a broad range of breast cancer and related backgrounds, including medical professionals, public health experts and directors of community health programs. Reviewers are selected on a competitive basis from communities throughout the U.S., including those where Avon Foundation fundraising events are held.

Funding is awarded on a competitive basis to organizations that can successfully implement breast cancer early detection programs that include breast health education, regular mammography screening, clinical breast examination (CBE), and breast self-examination (BSE) for at-risk, medically underserved women 40 and older.
